For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Now, Voyager (1942), a classic melodrama starring Bette Davis as 30-something spinster under the thumb of her oppressive mother; she suffers a nervous breakdown, goes to therapy, and gradually asserts her independence, even finding some romance along the way. Some dramatic twists and turns ensue. Yes, they were making movies like this in the 1940s already. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of director Irving Rapper; he was a one-hit wonder. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

After that is The Legend of Hei 2 (2025), the sequel to the animated fantasy The Legend of Hei (2019), which we watched yesterday. It features the same creative staff as the first, including director MTJJ. The cat spirit Hei returns, along with his human mentor Wuxian, and both find the balance between the human and spirit realms threatened by sinister forces, who seem determined to pit the two sides at war with one another. Expect a whole of fancy and well-animated fight scenes along the way. Reviews generally consider this to be superior to the first film.
