For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, 8PM EST, it’s Disney villain Jokerfifcation origin story Cruella (2021) and Chinese animated cat fantasy The Legend of Hei (2019)! (CWs inside)

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Cruella (2021), a movie that looks at the origin story of Cruella De Vil, the repulsive puppy murderer from Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (1961), and says, “you know, she wasn’t that bad actually.” This film casts her as a punk and fashionista in 1970s London (played by Emma Stone), and posits that sinister forces surrounding her made her create her own Joker-esque villain persona, named Cruella, who particularly hates dogs. An odd direction to take this character, but it’s really popular on Letterboxd for some reason, so let’s check it out. Director Craig Gillespie also did I, Tonya (2017) and Lars and the Real Girl (2007), both of which we previously watched.

After that is The Legend of Hei (2019), a Chinese animated fantasy. This is a rare Blorptube rerun; we actually watched this in 2023, but The Legend of Hei 2 (2025) just came out (it will show on the ‘tube tomorrow), and I doubt anyone remembers what happened in the first one, so we should probably refresh our memories. Humans deforest a cat’s home, and, while searching for a new one, he meets a group of spirits at war with humankind. A friendly human takes in the cat and teaches him to harness his own spirit powers, and then the cat must decide whether he will join the humans or the spirits in their battle for Earth. Pretty much X-Men, but with the Chinese equivalent of youkai. Director MTJJ has only made this and its recently-released and even-more-acclaimed sequel.
