discord should remove phone numbers from verification
i've already posted this on reddit (in r/discordapp, but the subreddit removed it for "violating the rules of the subreddit"). that said, yesterday, because i've been friending people at a very fast rate, discord thought my account is being automated and locked out my account - the way i have to unlock it is by verifying with a phone number.
i think email verification is good, but vertifying with a phone number without permission counts as coercion which (as a left-libertarian) goes against the non-aggression principle (DON'T use force or coercion on anyone). that's why i think phone numbers should be taken off the verification process on discord.
i also think email verification should be encouraged more. seriously!

but if they do that, how are they gonna sell phone number data?

discord said that they DON'T sell phone number data, but my point still stands - discord should NOT allowed to ask for a phone number without permission in a very coercive way. that said, i think an alternative to a phone number for discord verification would be email and a random passphrase (like "did you forget we're tight on time?" - a little twenty one pilots reference). seriously!

Agree. I am forced to use voip since I don't have a plan for my cell and most of these tech companies don't allow verification via it which hurts poor people like me. There's absolutely nothing wrong with old school email verification.

the reason some companies require a phone number over email (other than to sell the data) is because a non-voip phone number is less easy and convenient to set up as a burner for bot purposes

as i said/like i said/again, i think an alternative to a phone number for discord verification would be email and a random passphrase (like a little twenty one pilots lyric/reference). seriously!

and as i said, they don't let you do that because it's easier to set up a burner email than it is a burner phone number
