Sunday Kino Night, 8PM EST: Indian Tamil Tigers drama A Peck on the Cheek (2002) and missing-child gaslighting thriller Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965)! (CWs inside)

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is A Peck on the Cheek (2002), AKA Kannathil Muthamittal, a Tamil-language Indian drama about an adopted young woman who discovers that her birth mother lives in Sri Lanka. She goes there to join her family, only to find that her mom is a member of the Tamil Tigers, and still engaged in active resistance against the Sri Lankan government. Drama ensues as she becomes unwittingly caught up in the groups’ armed struggle. Director Mani Ratnam also did the Godfather-esque gangster saga Nayakan (1987), which we previously watched; this is considered one of his best films, and is one of the highest-rated Indian films on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

After that is Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965), a thriller about a woman who moves to the UK, and goes to pick up her daughter from her first day at school, only to discover that no one has any record of said daughter’s existence. The authorities tell her that she never had a daughter, and that she is just delusional. However, she is confident that she is not, and investigates the apparent conspiracy at the heart of her daughter’s disappearance. This considered one of the best works of director Otto Preminger, who is better-known for Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Laura (1944); surprisingly, we have not yet watched any of his work on the ‘tube. That changes tonight.
