For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 61 through 66 tonight.

After that is Johnny Corncob (1973), a Hungarian surrealist fairy tale based on the 1845 epic poem “John the Valiant” by Sandor Petofi. It follows the adventures of a shepherd who rises through the ranks to become the savior of Hungary amidst a Turkish invasion. Apparently, some romance and magic are involved along the way, too. The film’s aesthetic is often compared to 60s psychedelia, such as Yellow Submarine (1968), with objects constantly changing size and transforming into other objects, and the like. Director is renowned animator Marcell Jankovics, whose Son of the White Mare (1981) we previously watched. This is considered one of the best animated films of the Eastern Bloc.
