Almost done watching the 7-episode Giant Robo OVA and it's one of the best anime I've seen. It's like a more earnest, melodramatic take on what Eva was similarly inspired by.

Giant Robo has such a good fucking design by Makoto Kobayashi. I wonder if Exodia from Yu-Gi-Oh is based on the '70s manga/tokusatsu or even the anime design here.

The animation's super-good. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op2rvF6fU44

it's awesome

the blend of science fiction and kung fu wuxia fuckery is delicious

If I remember right, they didn't have the full licensing rights for Giant Robo, so they mixed in a bunch of random stuff from the manga creators' works (like a bunch of Three Kingdoms characters etc).

Definitely gives the "kid playing with dad's old toys" vibe that ties in with the dedication to fathers and children lol

You should watch Space Runaway Ideon (and its movies A Contact and Be Invoked - especially Be Invoked) and Mobile Suit Victory Gundam

Imagawa has worked on some other pretty fun anime. I'm a pretty big fan of Getter Robo Armageddon, but I was introduced to him via Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

Yeah, I gotta' watch Ideon sometime too. I'm going to watch Gunbuster next, I think.

Gunbuster's a classic. It's a bit too awoogahentai-free at times, but I guess that's a lot of OVAs of the era
