For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Red Cliff II (2009), the second part of the Chinese war epic Red Cliff (2008), which we watched last week. It is directed by action maestro John Woo, whose work has popped up numerous times on Blorptube, such as when we watched Hard Boiled (1992) and Face/Off (1997). This film is set in AD 208 and centers on the Battle of Red Cliffs, arguably the most famous battle in the history of China. Han Dynasty chancellor Cao Cao wants to reunify China under the Han by conquering the neighboring realms of Xu and Wu. The latter two must set aside their differences and resist the imperial army together, which, in true Dynasty Warriors fashion, they accomplish by letting the commanders personally ride into battle and take out hundreds of soldiers by themselves. This was a big hit in China, so let’s give it a whirl. This one is not so much a sequel as the second half of the story, which Woo felt he had to split into two to avoid compromising his vision.

After that is Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1931), an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella of the same name. It follows the struggles of a scientist who Jokerfies himself through the powers of science, taking on a new, beastlike form (the eponymous Mr. Hyde) who indulges on all of his worst, most sadistic impulses. Will no one stop this menace? I guess we’ll find out. Director Rouben Mamoulian is otherwise best-known for Queen Christina (1933) and The Mark of Zorro (1940), neither of which we have yet watched. Since this released before the Hays Code started being seriously enforced in 1934, it also avoids much of the censorship associated with classic Hollywood.
