When looking at my inbox, images and emotes dont work when from a DM. If the image/emote is ![text]()
(This isnt working. The markdown is getting sanitized weirdly and the inline code is purged of the link and text portion. Ill try spacing it out: ! [ text ] ( some - url . tld "othertext")
Then it only renders as !text, with text rendered as a link to the image file itself. If theres no text between the brackets then its rendered as just an exclamation mark. This doesnt occur when viewing comment replies in my inbox, there the desired behavior is present with images rendered fully with the blur and show image button, and emotes rendered as emotes.
This has been going on for a little while now, and its starting to be an annoyance. Other users ive talked to have expressed the same technical problem and frustration.
Any ideas whats doing this and why its not working? And any ideas how to fix it?

you gotta be careful and only use whitelist hosts or bad actors can send you tracking images to get your IP

Lemmy servers should be proxying image links everywhere or only render ones from the pict-rs instance.
I believe the former is an instance setting for posts. Not sure if it applies to DMs.
Either way, no linked content should be sending requests to other domains without users explicitly choosing to open it IMO.
And since it isn't being interpreted as an image, the []() is being interpreted as a link
Also if this comm isn't working for you, subscribe to it and it will start working. But since others can't see it, posting to !technology@hexbear.net is probably better

Ohhh gotcha. Thats a little frustrating... I guess it makes sense from a harrasment perspective tho and its important to keep users safe.

There should definitely be a setting whether to show images from unknown senders, but until the design is hammered down, probably best to err on the side of protecting users from harassment.

Yeah... Nice to have, but def more important to protect users first and formost. I know there were people at one point sending CSAM to others and that just ugh fuck i hate that we have to protect ourselves from that. Protection is important and takes priority but i wish there wasnt anything to protect ourselves from
