I've never really got this take, I've def heard it before. kkkanada obviously, but unlike the US I've never once seen Thanksgiving associated at all with colonialism. Like there's no whitewashing of euro settlers as part of the tradition here it's just a harvest festival, like maybe the festival most shared across different cultures.

Like if the takeaway is settlers just shouldn't get to enjoy anything because of residential schools I'm not in theory against it I just don't get why we don't hear similar arguments against Halloween or Easter.

And fish don't know they're in water.

Like the post says, it's inherently the celebration of stolen land and genocide, even if you haven't thought of it that way.

Or in other words

big-honk Just how did you get that harvest and the land it was grown on? You're thankful for what exactly?

Edit: it's just another example of kkkanada being the uwu smol bean "nicer" settler state because the fucking United States are next door. Both are founded on genocide, one has just been better at whitewashing it

amerikkka also decided that one day to celebrate colonialism wasn't enough so they also took y'all's day for it and called it "Columbus Day"

settlers aren't allowed to enjoy anything

Settlers simply need to recognize their history so they can be capable of making amends. Everyone loves a harvest festival, but y'all have mass grave skeletons in your closet that make it hard to enjoy the food. You know that shit stinks right? Even if you didn't personally make the mess yourself.

Yall brought those to the Americas! Thanksgiving has a specific historical tie to settler colonialism, so the conversation will obviously be about that.

I love The Real Fly Dog. I have a bunch of his posters up in my house.

At least Canadian Thanksgiving actually is when a harvest holiday should be instead of Burgerlander Thanksgiving that's closer to the winter solstice than the fall equinox.
