Who Gave Cis People Their Gender Identities?

I really liked this section:

We know from trans existence that the freedom of gender expression and the freedom from gendered trauma that is allowed in a society is directly correlated to trans survival. But I think we often fail to note that it also contributes to cis survival. Hear me out. In a modern society with more rigid and more brutally enforced gender roles, more women are abused, assaulted, and murdered in a system where patriarchal violence is more socially acceptable.

In a society with more rigid and enforced gender roles, men are expected to do more dangerous things, and to do them with less social support. For instance, fewer gender social protections also means fewer worker protections, and a society in which men are stigmatized for emotion. Under such societies of stricter and more rigid gender hierarchy, more cis women die of medical neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse, poverty, and pregnancy and childbirth complications. Under such societies, more cis men die from suicide, undiagnosed illnesses, violence, war, and work hazards.

All of this to say, in a society where gender roles are more fluid, in a society focused more on support than punishment, curiosity rather than control, the vast majority of people would be safer and happier. So then why do many cis people fight this tooth and nail? We live in a highly patrolled, regimented, and categorized society. This is capitalism. A society focused on profits above all else necessarily creates a measurement system for everything in order to accurately measure it for maximal profits. This system categorizes, sorts, exacts. Those of us who have grown up knowing nothing but this system fail to notice the forest through the trees: we have internalized that everything must be measurable to be real and profitable to be worthy.

I honestly, truly do believe that inside every adult in our modern society is a terrified little child, abused by authoritarian systems in our lives until we learned to behave to survive.
