Imperialism Reading Group - Super Imperialism, by Michael Hudson - Week 4 - March 10th to March 16th, 2025
This is a weekly thread in which we read through books on and related to imperialism and geopolitics. Last week's thread is here.
Welcome to the fourth week of Michael Hudson's Super Imperialism: The Origin and Fundamentals of US World Dominance! I'm reading the Third Edition, but I imagine most of the information is the same if you have an earlier edition.
We are reading one chapter per week, meaning we will finish in June. Obviously, you are totally free to read faster than this pace and look at my/our commentary once we've caught up to you.
Every week, I will write a summary of the chapter(s) read, for those who have already read the book and don't wish to reread, can't follow along for various reasons, or for those joining later who want to dive right in to the next book without needing to pick this one up too. I will post all my chapter summaries in this final thread, for access in one convenient location. Please comment or message me directly if you wish to be pinged for this group.
This week, we will be reading Chapter 3: Power Through Creditor Status, 1932-1933, which is approximately 18 pages.
SeventyTwoTrillion [he/him] - 9mon
Super Imperialism ping list!
This chapter, we move from Hoover to Roosevelt, and see how Europe is doing at the start of the 1930s as Hitler rises to power.
Geez I really need to catch up, was waiting for Lent to start reading heavily and I kinda underestimated how dense the intro and first chapter were gonna be!

Wertheimer [any] - 9mon
Me too. I underestimated how many books I need to finish before really diving into this one. I keep saying yes to all the book clubs in my life and I need to start saying no to things like sleeping, eating, and going outside.

eyyImwalkin [none/use name] - 9mon
when are they gonna come out with dynamax imperalism
6
GoodGuyWithACat [he/him] - 9mon
Dragon Ball Super Imperialism.

FunkyStuff [he/him] - 9mon
Concept check - the transfer problem difficulty referred to in this chapter (and chapter 1 IIRC) was that money taken from Britain and Germany to repay the war debts was causing deflation, meaning that their debt repayment would get harder and harder as they completed payments; this effect was due to the US not recycling the currency acquired in those payments to buy back those countries' exports?

Gorillatactics [none/use name] - 9mon
I genuinely can't remember if I read this book or not. I have a pdf, but that's no guarantee. Either way Michael Hudson is very insightful.

Despite this chapter being the most straight forward in regards to narrative, I find it the hardest to follow the policy. Maybe it's because of all the different competing visions between England, Hoover, and FDR. Maybe it's because FDR's international policies weren't coherent. Looking forward to the patented 72 Trilly summary.

SeventyTwoTrillion [he/him] - 9mon
Apologies for the lack of summaries and discussion on my end, been a little swamped over the past 10 days or so, so I've only been able to do a read through chapter 2 and 3 once. They'll be coming soon though!

Don't worry man, we can all carry this burden.

Cowbee [he/him, they/them] - 9mon
Gotta catch up, I'm a chapter behind. I should be able to be up to date for this next chapter though.
SeventyTwoTrillion in theory
