SpinMeRound - 6day

Was bracing myself for a nasty rental increase, looking at another (almost identical) unit that's gone up for rent in my area, but have been offered another year with a $10 increase. Very very surprised and pleased by that!

12
WaterWaiver - 4day

I've had some other friends mention only a tiny increase. Surprising.

today first day I don't feel tired from the vax

I might go out for a bit, look at some art stuff, then do my UnKAOS chores when I get home.

Cats are cranky today, it's the 2nd day where I reduced dry food ration by 2 tbsps. They are both at least a kilo overweight still. ( as am I )

8
melbaboutown - 6day

Strongly regretting having got rid of my old ps2 years ago. Maybe I should buy another one to watch dvds and play games. Just not sure if theyโ€™re compatible with modern tvs.

Iโ€™m not really savvy about tvs

Edit: ::: spoiler Need to babyproof the house Melbcat just tried to eat a long loose thread dangling from the doona. I heard her chewing weird, pulled the wadded thread out of her mouth immediately and called the emergency vet who said it didnโ€™t warrant bringing her in because it wasnโ€™t swallowed.

She seems fine and drank some water without problems. So thankful. But I think I scraped her little mouth or throat, seems sore so will call the normal vet when they open.

That a-hole piece of thread is in the bin now. I pulled all of the other horizontal stitch lines out of the Kmart doona and binned them too because the ends hadnโ€™t been sewn in to secure them and some of them were also coming loose.

I saw the thread but didnโ€™t expect that. Any other thread and yarn has now gone into a plastic box with a lid. ๐Ÿงฟ :::

8
Seagoon_ - 6day

she's a silly

6
Taleya - 6day

You're good hon, its only a concern if swallowed because it could potentially knot up and block the long complicated spaghetti machinery that resides within yon puss. Usually when I catch our buggers doing that it means they want more grass or a chew stick, I don't think you hurt her mouth if shes drinking and using it like normal.

6
melbaboutown - 6day

I managed to pull it out with slight resistance so itโ€™s possible it started to go down her throat and I slightly hurt her. There was soreness but sheโ€™s eating and drinking so thatโ€™s good

::: spoiler Alfie did similar with tinsel. I once used a tinsel wall (so long strands of tinsel) to do some Christmas photos and turned my back on Alfie for one moment. Heard some weird chewing, turned back and sure enough he's chewing the tinsel. I grabbed it and started pulling it out of this month... and kept pulling... and kept pulling. I can't believe how fast he managed to gobble it down!! Absolute buggers! :::

Oh yeah, I will not have a Xmas tree. Normally Melbcat doesnโ€™t eat anything dangerous but after this the possibility is there and needs to be accounted for

3
tombruzzo - 6day

I kind of got stung by a bee on the ride to work today. I felt something during the ride to see a bee stuck to my trousers. I don't think it got too far past the fabric but I can feel my leg a little.

Also, I checked the odometer of the bike and I've done over 1200km on it so far. That's 2-3 tanks of petrol depending on how you drive.

Eyelash tint has made me look like a raccoon. I normally don't use Vaseline around my eye and am careful but today, that was not the case. Frantically rubbing micellar water on my eyelids to look less crazy.

I just use a pencil and then a bit of mascara, but I cheated, I got Miss Seagoon to show me the best shape for my face

5
LowExperience2368 - 6day

That's a good idea, but I have the dexterity of a blobfish (it takes practise, I know)

May I ask what the best shape is? Or how she figured that out?

2
Seagoon_ - 5day

she followed my natural eyebrow shape and my brow

2
Eagle - 6day

It'll fade. I bit the bullet and had my eyebrows dyed last week. I'm naturally very fair, and the rate i was plucking greys out i would have no eyebrows left. And rather than stuff it up myself, i paid a professional.

But now I look like Wreck it Ralph. They have faded a bit but I'm pulling my fringe down to cover them still!

4
LowExperience2368 - 6day

Yes they do fade! I have had many many bad eyebrow dyes as someone with pretty much invisibrows.

I remember paying almost 80 bucks for some lady to dye and shape my eyebrows and I ended up looking like Wreck It Ralph but even more intense.

::: spoiler if you want to diy Would recommend the 1000 hour tint if you want to try doing it yourself! It's pretty simple to do and cheap compared to getting them done by a professional. If you have some Vaseline, it should be a-okay. The lighter tints are a bit warm toned though. There's a brand starting with R that does cooler toned ones, I'll have to think of what that was. Also have heard beard dye works well too. :::

I thought bubs had a grubby spot on her lower back due to flea dirt but was told by a vet itโ€™s simply because she canโ€™t reach that one spot to wash (long back + stiff with arthritis). But also just got told by a vet nurse that it is flea dirt.

Iโ€™ve been a bit slack because sheโ€™s indoor only but I guess I tracked in some from the black cat outside.

Guess Iโ€™ll gently comb and wipe out if she lets me and re-treat. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve given the flea and worm spot on yet this month. I need to make a space on the chore chart for monthly cat care jobs.

Unfortunately I donโ€™t use any other insecticide than the topical. And diatomaceous earth/silica dust isnโ€™t asthma safe. Washing all the cloth and vacuuming is going to be buns. ๐Ÿซฉ

Any instrument or former instrument players or even crafty people here, what is something you did in your practise that lead to significant improvements?

4

Slow down if you're making mistakes

Use a metronome

Record yourself so you know how you sound

Music theory is not the enemy

But above all of that, have fun!!!

phant - 6day

For gigs. Practice how you play. Sure I can practise the act of making the right notes by sitting in front of my computer. But there's more involved in a gig and I learnt it's worth practising it all (as much as feasible). Stand up, guitar into pedals into amp, mic on mic stand (plugged into some speakers if possible). On stage it's easy to forget shit like this-pedal on/off now or shit I'm s'posed to be at the mic right now. And then just general stage presence. Open mics also great practise grounds.

4
LowExperience2368 - 6day

Yeah I should practise standing up! Thanks for the tips :)

Listening to a recording of myself. Quietened my loud breathing down after that! ( it was a wind instrument but I sounded like I was gasping!)

4
LowExperience2368 - 6day

Ooh yes that's a great one! Thanks!

3
melbaboutown - 6day

Are there any exercises to practice to improve individual skills in isolation?

Like a particular โ€˜songโ€™ made to get you used to a tricky chord and ingrain it in muscle memory? Fundamentals?

Edit:

Disclaimer: I was too lazy to get into music lessons and trying to do art practice is like trying to get a greased up eight legged dog into a bathtub. But something like this might point you in the right direction? https://theonlinemusicteacher.com/practice

Like maybe identify what the specific sticking points are (Strength or control of hands? A particular finger movement or placement? Perfectionism? Struggling with inattention? Anxiety or mental block? Hate the available songs?) and see if thereโ€™s any fundamentals or ways to get through it.

Doing 5 low pressure minutes a day like video game dailies might help.

Another important thing to be aware of is when itโ€™s due to not having the time, energy or right headspace, and when not to push yourself.

If you force yourself through despite depression, illness, or overwhelming stress levels you have a very good chance of starting to hate the hobby and yourself.

Edit 2: Oh yeah and if you have ADHD you may have to understand and forgive yourself if you struggle with inconsistency.

3
LowExperience2368 - 6day

Thanks melba! I don't believe lazy is entirely a thing. You can either be disinterested, or want to do it, but have various barriers in the way.

I absolutely struggle with inconsistency at the moment and am trying to rectify that. My problem is that I don't push myself because I tell myself that it's going to be too hard when I do need a nudge.

3
melbaboutown - 6day

I was called โ€˜talentedโ€™ but never actually really began. ::: spoiler spoiler To be honest I hated the kiddie songs for beginners and was being placed under unreasonable expectations by adults who either wanted to live their failed dreams through me or have a show pony that did tricks. The pressure killed my desire and the boring fundamentals work did the rest.

Also I had way too much else on my plate like survival.

The same things were true with art as a kid, and are true now with the ukulele. No idea where it is. :::

But I was and am very tired and distractable so itโ€™s just easier and less revealing to call it lazy. Itโ€™s entirely possible thereโ€™s undiagnosed ADHD for me as well.

Ironically video game dailies/rep grinds (and physio) are the only way I really learned to have any sort of consistency. I also have the โ€˜procrastinate because it will be too hardโ€™ brain and what helps is to just do the absolute least. Pick a stupidly simple task and do it once a day or even once a week if you have to.

This is also how I built the flossing habit. Bought floss picks and put them where I spent the most time. Flossed one handed while scrolling or gaming.

You need to break it down into small steps that donโ€™t release stress chemicals or require you to go massively out of your way otherwise it becomes aversive.

Also you have to think about why you want to do it. As thatโ€™s a bigger or more consistent motivation than anything external which (can also be extremely important and was the reason I started trying to do art again but) can be less reliably available. Is it something you still want to explore or are you just pushing yourself to meet expectations?

3
LowExperience2368 - 5day

Thanks melba! I love the video game dailies method!

Tell me about the kiddie songs for beginners! Especially on piano. It's always worth playing music you like.

Good on you for having a flossing habit.

I think I still want to play music and just do things in general, it's just that lately I've been really sleep deprived and everything feels too hard.

2
melbaboutown - 5day

Yeah, it was piano for me also.

Iโ€™m feeling that, it really is time to take it easy with anything non essential

3
melbaboutown - 6day

If you have no Stingose or hydrocortisone you could try to run water as hot as you can comfortably stand over the bites so the heat deactivates the thing causing the reaction? (Be careful not to scald yourself.)

Edit: Probably not safe. Baking powder paste might still irritate your skin but less chance of a burn.

Another option is aluminium antiperspirant (like from a roll on) which is a lot weaker than the aluminium in Stingose but might help somewhat.

Also if you canโ€™t resist scratching, try instead lightly slapping the bites or around them (old advice for tattoos). It creates a distracting sensation without the damaging friction on compromised skin.

They got me really bad the other day and I swell up because allergic.

3
Seagoon_ - 6day

i'm putting lidocaine cream on

it's swollen up right on my wrist

3

I used a very very hot compress to denature the toxin and relieve the itching, it's feeling a lot better

( I just saw you recommended that already, it works well but I wouldn't do it on anyone else )

Anywhere people recommend for buying second hand or refurbished PC parts? I'm looking to upgrade my girlfriend's laptop because she's trying to live in 2025 with 8gb ram. I know ram prices are meant to be crazy right now but I hope people aren't paying top shelf for second hand laptop memory.

The only places I know of either sell new or refurbished full PCs.

2
SaneMartigan - 6day

You need an overclockers forum account, the sales section unlocks after 3 months.

What kind of RAM? I think I've got some 4gb laptop ram about.

It's got an SSD too yeah?

3
tombruzzo - 5day

I remember you mentioned that and I signed up. It has 2 slots for DDR4 SODIMM so 16GB would be enough, 32GB on a deal would be perfect. And yeah, an NVME slot and an empty 2.5 slot

I had to buy a new laptop to move on from living on 8gb in 2025, the RAM was soldered on for my old laptop. Looks like I might have bought at the right time if RAM prices are going to make new laptops more expensive? Good luck searching!

2
tombruzzo - 5day

You bought at the right time. The demand for compute means the AI companies are gobbling up all the RAM, I'm sure they'd find servers with slots for laptop RAM.

I got my girlfriend a Dell, and whilst I have my issues with them at least they have that workstation DNA where they come apart alright and everything is removable
