You’re imagining things. All previous versions of the Myki system have been incompatible with payment cards. (The next one apparently will accept credit/debit card payments, though.)

Worth pointing out that they added the ability to pay a Myki fine on the spot from anywhere with a credit card over a decade ago. Priorities and all that.

Is it possible you're conflating it with Sydney, which has allowed paying with credit cards since 2017? Or maybe with Melbourne's free tram?
