In short:

Asia is home to nine of the world's 10 most populous cities in 2025, according to the United Nations.

A new report identifies Jakarta, with 42 million residents, as having the largest population globally.

Tokyo had long held the title as the world's largest city, but its population growth has stagnated.

It's kind of wild to me that I've never heard of a city that's now the largest in the world

It's weird to me that someone hasn't heard of one of Asia's major cities! (I don't mean that in a bad way)

I know about Jakarta because I read about how the CIA couped Sukarno during the Cold War.

With CIA track record you must know geography pretty well.

I went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about the world's biggest cities and a lot of it is down to how city limits are defined. Which is different in every country.
For example, the average population density of the city of Chongqing, as defined by the Chinese government, is lower than that of 34 countries.
