First day went well!

I share an office with the head of sales which is pretty sweet.

A lot to take in and I'm getting home a bit later because I stayed back for a bit longer.

Got taken out to lunch with leadership team and that was pretty cool!

Tired and have to feed the cat family lol

13
Bottom_racer - 1mon

Glad to hear it went well!

6
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 1mon

Thanks man. I mean work is work but it's nice to be somewhere where they actually respect your opinion.

This is good. :)

You so deserve this.

Strays have been given their dry food. Time for brekkie, shower and off I go.

Have a great day everyone ❤️

Edit: I forgot about the morning train squash lol

6
Alamutjones - 1mon

Mr Professional!

Tell us how it goes

5
PeelerSheila - 1mon

Baked a loaf this morning before work after proving overnight. I can't believe how soft the crumb is for a sourdough. Of course now it's mostly gone 😄

Edit: could do with a bread knife that doesn't butcher the loaf. This loaf was actually cool when I cut it 🤦🏼‍♀️

11
Eagle - 1mon

Well done! I've never been able to master the overnight proving, it ends up walking everywhere!

4
Thornburywitch - 1mon

Chuck the bowl in the crisper drawer of your fridge. 12 hours is about right for fridge proving. This assumes that your fridge is 6 deg C consistently.

4
Eagle - 1mon

It never works, its like it goes into the fridge and stops proving all together. Its okay if I want a Frisbee of sourdough, not a loaf. I might be putting it in too early but I'm happy to benchtop prove for now.

3
PeelerSheila - 1mon

Same goes for me. I just couldn't get it to work or make the kind of loaf that we all can enjoy.

3
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 1mon

Include a smashed up boiled potato in the dough - yeast goes nuts when it meets potato. I usually keep back some mashed spud and put that in the starter sponge. Works well for me. Also for the fridge proving, you've gotta cover the bowl well with clingfilm. Maybe fridge is less than 6 degrees?

2
PeelerSheila - 1mon

Definitely fridge is less than 6°C, it's usually around 2°C and everything up the back gets partly frozen! Thanks for the info about potato, I had no idea about that!

1
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 1mon

If your fridge is reliably less than 6 degrees, then forget about fridge proving. Yeast is very flexible, but lower than that temp it dies. If you have a cold bathroom that's above 6 degrees, that might work better for proving. Just remember to take it back into the kitchen before the family showers en masse.

2
PeelerSheila - 1mon

This was the method I tried first and just couldn't get it to work. Way too dense and no lift. I've made a lot of pizza and cake in my time so I started treating it like a combination of both of those and it worked fine. Well, it makes a loaf that we enjoy eating anyway.

3
PeelerSheila - 1mon

My starter wants to take over the world 🤣

3
Seagoon_ - 1mon

the crust is too soft

take out of tin and bake another 15 minutes, people tend to undercook bread nowadays

2
PeelerSheila - 1mon

It was perfect for me, any harder and a) my knife wouldn't have been up to the job and b) the oldest 2 members of the household can't chew it 🤣. I know some people like their bread super crusty but we just can't do it at our place 😔

4
Rusty Raven - 1mon

::: spoiler Miss Meow is in full snore mode this morning. I think I like her plans for the day, turn your back on the grey outside and snooze. :::

I mis-typed that the first time as "turn your back on the grey outside and sneeze", which is actually also appropriate at this hayfever inducing time of year.

10
donnachaidh @lemmy.world - 1mon

Just found out I didn't land the job I was really desperate for and looking forward to, which was very uniquely suited to me.

10
Seagoon_ - 1mon

so many hugs

and good luck for the future

5
PeelerSheila - 1mon

Ah dang, sorry to hear that for you.

4
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 1mon

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you land what you're looking for :)

7

but woke up angry!?

and have already cried once this morning

5
SaneMartigan - 1mon

Man, Springvale Rd is always shit traffic. With all the speed limit changes and people not paying attention it feels like everyone just does 50 instead of 60/70/80. Fuck Springvale Rd.

9
Rusty Raven - 1mon

Pakige contained some cheap slip on shoes, which are now at the back door in case I need to go out to the garden that way. The new house having more doors has meant I also need more shoes, The hard bit now is making sure I always go back in the same door I exited from so I can reclaim my slippers.

8
Taleya - 1mon

nah, you get into the habit of kicking them off and putting them at the right door

5
force_majeure1234 @lemmy.world - 1mon

Overheard on the way home: "You can un-wrinkle your nuts?!"

8
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 1mon

Don't leave me hanging

5
force_majeure1234 @lemmy.world - 1mon

That's part of the cool thing about nut wrinkles, they actually control how you hang

Air fried panko onion rings for starters tonight:

First time for the rings in the air thingo. Worked well. Now wondering about calamari, same method hrmmm...

8
Seagoon_ - 1mon

that looks delicious

I had chicken and vegies in a honey sauce and rice, it was not half as nice as your dish

6
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 1mon

I feel bad because the cats got rained on waiting for me to get home. Hopefully now they'll realise I'm not back till later

8
LowExperience2368 - 1mon

Still 6?

5
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 1mon

There's 8 total now. We had some new additions

8
Bottom_racer - 1mon

Someone needs to do a painting of that lol. It's perfect in every way.

8
LowExperience2368 - 1mon

So cute 😻

5

operation UnKAOS on target

all the chores done now for some reading, I am reading a book on driving skills. :)

8
CEOofmyhouse56 - 1mon

That's great news!

I'm UnKAOSing my laundry rn.

6
Bottom_racer - 1mon

Currently doing the garage / workshop.

Surprisingly not as painful as I thought considering how much shit is in there. Some stuff (very well made old school wooden handle chisels etc.) would be my late grandfathers so probably 70-80-ish years old.

5
Seagoon_ - 1mon

I love old tools 👍

5
Bottom_racer - 1mon

Accidental poppy patch about to go. Ol' girl: "oh I only threw a few seeds in".

Yea..

8

On your way to start a personal opium empire. Noice.

10
Bottom_racer - 1mon

Now that Afghanistan is outta the game I'll clean up!

Only have to contend w/ tassie but they only do 50% of the worlds production so they don't stand a chance.

5
Eagle - 1mon

I have these pop up in my lawn. I think I planted a packet 10 years ago!

6
Seagoon_ - 1mon

these are lovely and timely too, tomorrow is 11/11

Went to Welcome To Thornbury yesterday for the first time in ages. There was this fantasy market and it was the first time I saw more of the place than just the food truck area. That place has come along nicely and is really popping off

7
Seagoon_ - 1mon

a squall came through while I was down at the beach

exciting and I wasn't the only crazy out there, all the fishermen were leaving to go out on the bay

7
SpinMeRound - 1mon

Dramatic! 😍

4
Seagoon_ - 1mon

in an instant it went from mild to freezing cold sleet and high wind

I'm not worried about getting caught in bad weather at the beach as it's not too far and I can be warm and get dry clothes shortly

4
Taleya - 1mon

Looking at the grey and stoked af because i want to finish the paving and my photosensitivity is being a bitch. that 30 seconds of weekend sunshine nuked my arm.

Caught up with an old friend for dinner. Short notice -they are only in town for a day. Nice meal and chats. The CBD is pretty in the rain.

5
SaneMartigan - 1mon

Anyone got any bedding recommendations? I need new bedding. I've worn through another set. First I wear through the fitted sheet, then I start using the flat sheet as a fitted sheet, then I wear through that. I'm currently wearing through a linen throw that was about twice the material weight of the sheets. Not Bed Threads, that's what I've just worn through.

6
Pilk - 1mon

W.H Amad supply hotels, manufacture in Coburg and supply to public. They have more durable options and can make doona covers with your own custom colour scheme -- though limited colours.

5
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 1mon

Second this. W H Amad are excellent. Yes you can order online. They do sheets etc. for most of the big hotels and their plain white linen sheets etc. are excellent. Mine are now plus 15 years and still going strong - even after 2 teenage boys. They cost, but they're worth it. The only better ones I've got are the irish linen sheets my MOTHER bought when she married back in the 50s - these are starting to wear out but are still usable.

5
PeelerSheila - 1mon

It must've been the wedding present trend of the time, as my mother got Irish linen tablecloths and napkins things gifted to her for her first marriage. Lovely stuff.

2
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 1mon

Yep. Irish linen was the go to. Deservedly. It's marvellous stuff.

3
CEOofmyhouse56 - 1mon

I just bought a couple of these from Big W and they're not bad. They wash well and don't pill.

Openook Albany Fitted Sheet - Blue Chambray | BIG W https://share.google/b3A7d4WCiytCYtIn0

3
melbaboutown - 1mon

Is it that you only have one set that gets washed and used over and over? I just buy a few sets of cheap sheets and rotate them

Edit: Or do you have a top loader washing machine which is harder on clothes/bedding? Frequent bleaching that weakens the material? Or does the soap not all rinse out so the fibres break?

3
SaneMartigan - 1mon

I used to have multiple sets and rotate but have worn through them without replacing.

3
Seagoon_ - 1mon

I have found Linen House to be excellent. They wear very well and are very comfortable.

2
Taleya - 1mon

$86 for enough syrup to make 76 odd litres of coke....

starts researching home postmix

5
Seagoon_ - 1mon

and then there is the cost of aerating

4
Taleya - 1mon

??? C02 is cheap as. Especially if you have bottles already for the kegerator

3
Seagoon_ - 1mon

I was thinking of soda stream cannisters , those are spenny

3
Taleya - 1mon

Yeah those have an insane markup. You can get a 2.5kg swap bottle for about $30-$35

By comparison a standard "60l" soda stream canister holds around 400g

1
SaneMartigan - 1mon

$1.13 a litre doesn't seem cheap.

4
LowExperience2368 - 1mon

Cheaper than petrol these days

3
Taleya - 1mon

How much is a litre of branded coke where you are?

2
SaneMartigan - 1mon

I don't think syrup vs supermarket bottle is a fair comparison. I buy cordial for a few bucks that makes ten litres. I only get coke at HJs when hungover. If you're regularly smashing high priced bottles of branded coke then maybe the $1.13 a litre is still good value to you.

2
Taleya - 1mon

...yes, i am talking about myself that's why i was talking about postmix for my house.

This conversation is being very weird

1
melbaboutown - 1mon

I feel so frustrated and antsy.

5
Seagoon_ - 1mon

hugs,

maybe go for a short walk :)

4
melbaboutown - 1mon

Thanks, I just went for one and it helped a little.

Everything that stabilises me is just in such a state of upheaval while none of the bad stuff changes -_-

3
Seagoon_ - 1mon

I hear you.

3
Rusty Raven - 1mon

Pakige already!

5
CEOofmyhouse56 - 1mon

Today is my drivers licence anniversary. I remember the day and date but the year is a little hazy. By my calculations it was possibly '98. It was a stinking hot Friday morning and I was sweating buckets in a car that would not have passed a roadworthy.

5
Thornburywitch - 1mon

Did mine at the Box Hill copshop - on the Saturday morning before Christmas in 1975. Yes, the traffic was chaos and I'm sure the copper took this into account cos I got it on the first try. In those days, all the shops shut down at 12 noon on Saturday so there was something of a gadarene swine vibe about the whole of Box Hill Shopping centre that day.

6
CEOofmyhouse56 - 1mon

I'm old enough to remember when the shops shut at noon. My mum yelling at me to hurry up or "there'll be no bread left on the shelves at Safeway'.

5
Thornburywitch - 1mon

Those were the days. Glad they're gone too.

6
Seagoon_ - 1mon

we have more equality and rights 👍

but our wages have gone to shit because of the destruction of unions

5
Seagoon_ - 1mon

Closed at noon on Saturday , closed all Sunday. Some were even closed for lunch.

Food was wrapped in foil or wax paper.

And I remember when most supermarkets were small independent grocers, there was not the duopoly there is today.

5
Rusty Raven - 1mon

And when they did start opening, the Supermarkets were not allowed to sell meat or hardware items on the weekend, so they would empty the meat fridges and close off some of the shelves. I have no idea how mum managed to do the shopping once she went back to work full time.

The trading time restrictions also varied by area, when I was in Warnambool in the '90s there was only very limited Sunday trading, but it had been normal for years in Melbourne.

5
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 1mon

Supermarket bags were brown paper - a most marvellous craft resource when we were kids. You just had to remember NOT to put the ice cream in the bottom cos it would drip and the bottom would fall out of the bag.

1
CEOofmyhouse56 - 1mon

Edit: It was not a Friday. It was a Tuesday.

4
Seagoon_ - 1mon

Good night everyone, sweet dreams 😘

4
Seagoon_ - 1mon

adding to my UnKAOS schedule, I've slotted in PT :)

so looking at getting some PT printouts

so many exercises on the net are AI and are even worse than the usual crap, most are useless, some are dangerous 😲

I just go very safe reliable sites, like Mayo

( I am just getting some printouts of exercises that were given me already, but they did not give printouts like I asked )

4
melbaboutown - 1mon

At home self led or with a physio?

If you can afford it maybe have a few physio sessions to learn the exercises safely and then quit (absconding with the exercise routine)

3
Seagoon_ - 1mon

I did have a PT show me

3
melbaboutown - 1mon

Ah sorry I misunderstood
