Where are these storms at? I keep getting blasted with severe storm warnings and being told to stay home and shelter and it's nothing but a bit of rain.

Yesterday's storm was absolutely terrifying. I had a short 10 minute drive home from lunch with friends (normally I'd ride, but I drove yesterday because of the weather), and it was one of the most terrifying drives of my life. Lightning all around me, quite a bit of it less than a kilometre away (based on gap between lightning and thunder). I got stuck at the intersection outside my home for way too long, because as I was waiting to turn, the intersection's lights all failed and switched to flashing yellow.
Took a few moments to figure out how to react to that, especially since there were cars waiting to exit both side streets, as well as cars continuing straight along the main road. Just when I finally decide to start creeping out into the intersection, to turn right after the next oncoming car has gone...the lights turn back on. Restarting the light's cycle, so I have to wait the whole cycle before I'll get a green, with lightning constantly going on all around me. One of the cars on a side street decides they've had enough and just turn left against red, and honestly I can't blame them.
I have never felt more relieved when I finally pulled into my garage than I did yesterday.

I'm not trying to be a wally, but what was the worst that could have happened? Lightning won't hurt you inside a car, nor will rain. Maybe a tree branch might pose a threat if you're under trees and it's blowing a gale I guess.
I used to spend a lot of time on the road and I'd be driving in all sorts of conditions and one thing it taught me is that we massively overestimate the risks if weather.
It's other drivers you've got to look out for π¬ The oblivious way that some people drive terrifies me.

No offence, but I've read that that's true in theory, but I do not want to test that theory.
