Yarrabyte's gone missing again. Last seen behind the tapestry wool in Spotlight. No way of knowing if still there. Should we send out a search party?

CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

I wanna let youse know YarraByte is with me and we are getting pissed together. They may not turn up for work tonight because my parties can get pretty wild.

Cheers everyone ๐Ÿบ

12
Seagoon_ - 2mon

Did they have an excuse for not turning up last night?

6
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Mental health break. Too much responsibility.

I has new friends thanks to pizza:

The friends:

The pizza:

They're not quite at the stage of the one down the beach (who just does whatever it wants). It's a start.

Which calls for a rave choon

9

I'd be your friend for that pizza too.

It def looks good ๐Ÿคค

3

Yeah last I saw Yarrabyte was cracking into the sewing machine oil and chatting up the computerised Singers. Probably still hungover

Here's hoping the weekend will help me recharge a bit after feeling sick last weekend. I had the last few days at work to myself but I've felt so flat and out of it, I just need a longer rest I think

4

!

That's always a surprise to me.

4
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 2mon

It's bloody difficult stuff to refine without electricity, which wasn't available until relatively recently. Kaiser Wilhelm III had a special helmet made of gold and aluminium and the gold was the cheap bit.

5
Seagoon_ - 2mon

It was used to make crowns even

It was very hard to refine and smelt, that's why, takes very very high temps

3

WHEN YOU SET ONE UP

I am about to make a really big batch of caramalised onions. There will be tears. ๐Ÿง…๐Ÿ˜ญ

Edit: 4kg of onions sucessfully cut and in the saucepan to caramelise. There were tears, but not as many as I feared. Now I can start dealing with some less defensive vegetables.

6
Seagoon_ - 2mon

wear swimming goggles

also a good hint for at protests where you might expect some action

2
Alamutjones - 2mon

Sharpened your knife?

2
Rusty Raven - 2mon

Knife was sharpened. Onions had the ends cut off and then straight into water to be peeled. They were then sliced in the food processor, which was opened under the exhaust fan to put into the pan. I managed to get away with only needing to wash my face to end excessive teariness once, which is pretty good for me as I seem to be very sensitive to onion.

2
imoldgreeeg - 2mon

Do you freeze them or is this for a specific recipe?

1
Rusty Raven - 2mon

I freeze them. Most of them end up in toasted sandwiches.

2
Mert - 2mon

Breathe through your mouth while cutting them up.

2
Rusty Raven - 2mon

I wish that was all it took. I am very sensitive to onion and end up in tears cutting them as a regular occurance. With large batches like this tears are guaranteed.

2
Rusty Raven - 2mon

4kg onions = 31 serves of caramelised onion. That should last me a while.

6
Seagoon_ - 2mon

sounds delicious :)

2
Alamutjones - 2mon

Just cracked a chinotto

The shopping has all been put away. When you do a major shop monthly that takes quite a while. Sadly they didn't have the bag of potatoes I ordered and for some reason they decided they couldn't substitute them. Is there a major potato shortage I am unaware of? Fortunately I am not completely out, but I will have to go low potato for a while.

Other substitutions today include giving me red curry paste instead of yellow and a different cut of beef which won't work well for what I planned. So I'm making red curry beef instead of yellow curry chicken, and will make a different style of chicken curry from ingredients I already have.

This afternoon I will be doing some packaging of meat for the freezer and a few other food preps, and hopefully get a bit of gardening done too.

6
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Yes there is a potato shortage. Something to do with a drought in South Australia.

5
Rusty Raven - 2mon

How very rude of the universe to do this to me. This is one of the downsides to moving house, I would have had some from the garden if I hadn't done that.

5
Seagoon_ - 2mon

I haven't been able to find seed potatoes , I was looking for 2 months

4
Thornburywitch - 2mon

Given that Ballarat is right in the middle of Victoria's Big Potato district, you should be able to find some in specialty shops. Try the local shop in Trentham or Ballan. Cost per kilo will be astronomical (at least $3 per kilo), but the spuds should be nice & fresh and mega delicious. Yes, seed potatoes are grown all around Buninyong and Ballan and Trentham for most of Vic & SA. Ditto horseradish and parsnips. Something to do with the height above sea level preventing some diseases from getting into the seed potatoes. Plus fairly reliable rainfall at zigacktly the right times of the year and a very reliable cold season.

3
tone212_ - 2mon

This explains why my local had no potatoes last time I was there, sweet potato was the only option. Love sweet potato but it is not a substitute!

5
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

I quite like sweet potatoes in rich dishes such as stews and curries.

Here's my flex. I have 10 medium sized spuds ready for mash with my lamb chops for Sunday feast day.

Mr Woof's really not doing his guard dog duties well today. There is someone at the front door dropping off the groceries and he's just nonchalantly wandering around the back yard.

Edit: I just left him unattended with some of the shopping bags for a moment. Instead of getting into the lamb roast that was in one of the bags he thoroughly investigated the box of long life milk. He's just not dogging properly at all today ๐Ÿคฃ Maybe he just needs a good walk.

@Bottom_racer@aussie.zone

Dude check out ik multimedia. If you buy amplitube 5 for 30 bucks you get to choose another 42 plugins for free!!!!

5
Bottom_racer - 2mon

ooh been a while since I've seen a group buy that's a good deal!

Looking at their website I had no idea they're also leaning into hardware these days lol.

4
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon

Right? I wouldnโ€™t mind one of those arc microphones but a bit out of reach at the moment lol

Iโ€™m going to grab amplitude and see whatโ€™s on offer. I mean can always go to news but wouldnโ€™t hurt to own a couple.

4
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon

I grabbed em. There's some real useful ones like T-racks 6 and a few other mixing plugins

2
Alamutjones - 2mon

Todayโ€™s gone well so far. Let this continue

Parent made me go to a travel agent to get a quote, and they quoted 7k for a two week trip to Japan. That includes a tour, flights, accommodation and activities. I asked if that could be lower because I'm on a student budget, and got ghosted. I guess they weren't going to make enough commission.

Parents want me to go on a tour because they think I'll be bored, lonely, get lost or something might happen. I like the idea of it because everything is planned and someone is there to look out for you. Bit too exxy though. Solo travel seems a bit scary, especially as a woman. I flew to Sydney solo last year and ended up connecting with a friend. The moments alone were fine, but having a friend just made it more enjoyable. A highlight was my friend and I trying to find each other in the botanical gardens, except she was hiding from me and didn't tell me where she was. Imagine that in Tokyo. The tour company said they can give me a discount, but I'm thinking maybe I should just wait until the end of next year. It sucks because I've hyped myself up for it, but oh well. I waited 20 years before I went overseas (that was added to my HECS debt), so I can wait longer.

5
Bottom_racer - 2mon

get lost or something might happen

Japan is super safe.

I'd say ditch the tour and just organise it yourself. Getting lost is half the fun :)

5
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Yeah this is what I'm considering doing. Two weeks on my own can't be that bad. Plus if I see my friend, it's 10 days. I'm sure I'll meet people along the way!

4
Seagoon_ - 2mon

I've been lost many times, just find a main road, they often have maps or duck into a cafe and ask

if it's bad grab the closest taxi and ask to go to the nearest landmark you know

or to your hotel. Take a business card from your hotel's front desk and pass that to the taxi driver

2
tone212_ - 2mon

Tours are great but you pay a premium for having everything taken care of you. Also, less flexibility in your trip. I love solo travelling but I understand the thought of it is super daunting. Japan is a great place to have your first experience with this - it's very safe (taking the usual precautions you would anywhere else). Having to navigate a new place yourself is part of the experience, you can do a lot more than you think. And there are other ways to connect with solo travellers. I'm not coming from this with the female perspective though, you can do research on other solo female traveller experiences in Japan to see what it might be like.

4
Seagoon_ - 2mon

You can plan your own holiday and part of that might be organised day or two day tours if you are interested. It might be cheaper and easier than renting a car for longer trips.

get a big tour guide book and see what you want t do, DK or frommer is good, lonely planet is clueless. Booking is so easy now because internet.

Think of it this way, you live in a really big city so you already know how to do this :)

4
Rusty Raven - 2mon

I lost the containers I put my caramelised onions into to freeze. I searched everywhere without any success and decided to go to the backup plan of ice cube trays. Then I remembered where the containers are - in the pantry, right next to where I have been working all day and very visible. Fortunately I remembered before actually packaging the onions.

4
Seagoon_ - 2mon

ice cube trays sound like a very good idea

just freeze 'em then put them in freezer bags so you can use in single serves

2
Rusty Raven - 2mon

I like the little containers because they are easy to throw one in for lunch at the last minute if I've been a bit lax on preparation. I've always got some sliced cheese and bread available at a minimum, throwing on some caramelised onion makes a great last minute toastie. But ice cube trays work too - I have a few in different sizes and freeze things like herbs and tomato paste, very rarely actual ice.

2
Seagoon_ - 2mon

Let yarrabyte stew a bit and think they are lost

Urgh my microwave died. Do I get a fancy one or a cheap simple one. Convection and airfry seem to be things in microwaves now. e: hmm 3v3 votes. Imma see if the next Aldi has the convection on sale else I'll get a $50 700W baby microwave, babies are less than 20Litres yeah?

4
Eagle - 2mon

Cheap. The expensive ones die twice as fast in my experience. Currently have a Westinghouse, after a Samsung died 2 weeks after the warranty expired. Have always paid $$ for Sharp, but the cheap Westinghouse is doing a great job.

3
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

I have a Samsung. It's small. 2 things it doesn't do is large popcorn bags and microwave rice standing up (I lay it on It's side. It does the job). Go with one that microwaves, grills and bakes.

3
tombruzzo - 2mon

Those flatbed ones where your food stays still seem interesting. They're a bit more than a traditional microwave but it could be worth it for the extra space

2
SaneMartigan - 2mon

It's 99% re-heating meal prep or cooking poppadums so I don't need a heap of space.

Coles didn't have two satay chicken skewers so only supplied me with one. Which is slightly annoying, as one's not really enough for a meal.

Except when I went to pack everything I discovered there actually were two in the package. I'm not sure what happened there, but I guess "yay, free chicken skewer". If they wanted to give me something free it would have been nice if it was a move expensive item though.
