Anyone got any go to meditations/music/actions for dealing with panic attacks? My go tos are not working.
::: spoiler Title
Am having a really bad mental health day today. Have a bunch of things at home and work that are just overwhelming me and had to deal with snappy mcsnappheads this morning venting and correcting me while I was trying to do a simple handover to another staff member. Really fighting the urge to go and hide literally and figuratively. Come on brain. Just do something.
Can't face doing the GP and psych referral dance. I am hoping this is all externally caused and will pass. Just feeling very alone and panicked.
No I can't escalate the work stuff..I am where the buck stops for this particular stuff. I am just so sick of being a grown up.

I heard that you can tighten all of your muscles really hard and relax a couple of times to release the fight or flight.
Brisk exercise.
Allowing yourself to shake and tremble.
Dipping or splashing your face with cold water for the diving reflex.
Thereโs deep abdominal breathing.
Breathing into a bag didnโt do much but get that Centaurworld song tauntingly stuck in my head
Or even holding your breath until it subsides (something about carbon dioxide balance in your bloodstream)
I also heard antihistamines such as Benadryl can be used to calm you.
You can try chamomile tea made with two bags or valerian pills from the supermarket I guess. Or magnesium. Rescue remedy.
There are also options like beta blockers.
YMMV
Not much of that works for me to be honest.
Usually if itโs a bad one I get in a hot shower, take prescribed medication and/or suffer through it. Maybe calling a friend if theyโre free or a hotline. Try and get the regular professional appointment sooner.
When and if you can - I strongly suggest seeing a gp for valium and maybe a psych referral when and if you can face it, and getting tf out of the environment causing it or at least taking leave if possible.
Right now I suggest getting somewhere people leave you alone and maybe put something soothing in the background or call Lifeline.

You can also do glute bridges or heel slides (no band) without getting out of bed but I donโt wanna.
If youโre out of condition or thereโs the risk of hurting your back try single heel slides first rather than double. This will help support and stabilise your lower back rather than abruptly jerking both legs up at once and potentially pulling an abdominal muscle or spasmodically arching your back. It also can help isolate the muscles more.
Either way just make sure your abs are very slightly tensed and your tailbone is comfortably dropped down so your back is flat on the mat or the bed.
If the flat legs are hard, itโs tiring to tense or your lower back is twinging you can bend the non-working leg and put your foot flat on the bed for more stability.

I want to do art, to exercise, to UNKAOSโฆ
But it all takes energy and feels pointless
5
LowExperience2368 - 2mon
I spent many years of my life not doing things that could benefit me because of all the self-talk. Everything feels too hard or pointless or overwhelming or I won't enjoy it. I don't know about your situation, but it's tricky to recognise that sometimes your brain can be bullshitting you. Put on a five minute timer and start with something that can be done from where you are now! Like Zen Colour or something. I personally like doing the wordle.
Edit: I feel like the miserable has to outweigh the not wanting to do things. Takes time. Think of your values. I should too.
6
Seagoon_ - 2mon
For me that self talk was introjects, me repeating what I had been taught or bullied into thinking and doing.
and yes on the brain bs, emotion especially. All that talk you hear about , your emotions are valid and real, that's bs. That's what abusers want us to to react to. We need to listen to good sense.
The truly hard part is realising the origin of the negative self talk comes from other people, people we trusted and who we thought had our best interest at heart.
Think about what people say to you, does it make you feel stronger, does it make you happy.
I'm older now and still fighting bs in my head every single day.
But I am totes winning. I have the Seagoons now who I trust . I have some more wisdom too.
4
LowExperience2368 - 2mon
You go, Seagoon!!
I think all emotions are valid, but it's what you do with them that matters. E.g. feeling jealous or angry, people shame others for it. What they should be shaming is the behaviour that comes in response to those emotions. I'm a big fan of responding over reacting.
It's also important to remember that just because you feel a certain way, doesn't mean everything is that way. I constantly feel like I'm doomed. Or in social situations, if I feel awkward, I must be awkward and unlikeable. But then I remember I have a roof over my head, food to eat, a beautiful dog sleeping somewhere in the next room. I have had some successful social interactions and made some good connections. That doesn't invalidate the shitty feelings, but it helps to put things in perspective for me.
Oh also with the negative self-talk coming from other people, it makes me think about how young kids don't really have any of that at first, but then they're socialised to loathe themselves. I wonder if it's nature or nurture here. I think it has to do with our need to belong as well.
2
Seagoon_ - 2mon
No. Not all emotions are valid. Many are stupid and useless. I say this as someone who had severe crippling PTSD, emotions can suck, they can be based on insane ideas in your head , they can be destructive.
Note your emotions, question your emotions. Even good emotions.
Are your emotions coming from your true self, are they informing you?
3
Rusty Raven - 2mon
I believe the "your emotions are valid" idea has some merit, but only in the context of not being critical of yourself for feeling them. Accepting that you are feeling something can be an important part in the process of then stepping back and questioning why you are feeling it and whether it is appropriate for the situation you are in.
3
LowExperience2368 - 2mon
Yep, this is exactly what I meant. Thanks for articulating it so well.
2
Seagoon_ - 2mon
young kids donโt really have any of that at first,
sadly they can learn negative talk in infancy
Infants that are not nurtured, whose emotional health is neglected don't learn emotional regulation and they learn that people aren't to be trusted, not even mothers.
3
SaneMartigan - 2mon
Do a tiny bit of each, the pointless feeling is the resistance. 3 x 10 push ups against the kitchen counter and same squats sitting into a chair, you've got all day. Do the dishes. Draw a bird or some faces or a scene for a few minutes. If you don't have a lot of energy, aim to only spend a little lest your cup run empty.
5
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon
Got a cold from getting stuck in the rain yesterday. Lame.
5
LowExperience2368 - 2mon
This is an interesting line of thinking. I was told as a child that if I go out in the cold, I will get a cold. Have since heard it's a myth. Is it more the symptoms that come from cold exposure, like a "headcold" or the virus itself?
6
Thornburywitch - 2mon
Reduced immune system response if you get chilled I reckon. Also airborne viruses survive much longer in the cold due to a fatty outer layer that evaporates in hot weather and sunshine. Also UV kills viruses and there's less of that in cold weather.
7
Seagoon_ - 2mon
TIL
3
Seagoon_ - 2mon
I think it's exposure to cold can make us run down and more suspectable, if we are already fighting cold viruses we might succumb
5
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon
Maybe when youโre cold your immune system is a little less robust? Then again I was at the gym yesterday and those places are Petri dish of illnesses sometimes lol

UNKAOS sounds a bit like a submarine operation. How do we go about UNKAOSing? Any specific principles to follow, or is it just a matter of making shitty things better?
5

just organise your day in big blocks of time
then organise those blocks
make lists,
create habits

You start with KAOS and work against entropy to undo it
And usually you have to first invent the universe an organisational system

Put on a five minute timer and start with something that can be done from where you are now! Like Zen Colour or something. I personally like doing the wordle.
Edit: I feel like the miserable has to outweigh the not wanting to do things. Takes time. Think of your values. I should too.
I believe the "your emotions are valid" idea has some merit, but only in the context of not being critical of yourself for feeling them. Accepting that you are feeling something can be an important part in the process of then stepping back and questioning why you are feeling it and whether it is appropriate for the situation you are in.
Yep, this is exactly what I meant. Thanks for articulating it so well.
sadly they can learn negative talk in infancy
Infants that are not nurtured, whose emotional health is neglected don't learn emotional regulation and they learn that people aren't to be trusted, not even mothers.
Got a cold from getting stuck in the rain yesterday. Lame.
This is an interesting line of thinking. I was told as a child that if I go out in the cold, I will get a cold. Have since heard it's a myth. Is it more the symptoms that come from cold exposure, like a "headcold" or the virus itself?
Reduced immune system response if you get chilled I reckon. Also airborne viruses survive much longer in the cold due to a fatty outer layer that evaporates in hot weather and sunshine. Also UV kills viruses and there's less of that in cold weather.
TIL
I think it's exposure to cold can make us run down and more suspectable, if we are already fighting cold viruses we might succumb
Maybe when youโre cold your immune system is a little less robust? Then again I was at the gym yesterday and those places are Petri dish of illnesses sometimes lol
How does that work
No idea but it sucks lol

UNKAOS sounds a bit like a submarine operation. How do we go about UNKAOSing? Any specific principles to follow, or is it just a matter of making shitty things better?
just organise your day in big blocks of time
then organise those blocks
make lists,
create habits
You start with KAOS and work against entropy to undo it
And usually you have to first invent
the universean organisational systemFor me it's a way I can stop wasting time , also can stop fretting about not doing things
I am also embracing a "good enough" philosophy", good enough is better than not doing something at all. And I can improve next time a task comes up on my schedule, until then, I don't worry.
Iโve managed to get almost all the art supplies into a plastic tub and off the bench
excellent :)
STALKER is on at CInema Nova next week but what are these session times?
https://www.cinemanova.com.au/films/stalker
Who the fuck goes to the movies at 1:30pm on a Tuesday lol
Can't wait until I'm retired so I can make the weekly pilgrimage to Nova and Brunetti's Carlton to watch some esoteric film or 50th anniversary of some exploitation B movie at lunchtime on a weekday
I lived a 5 minute walk yet the movies they had on never inspired me ๐คท

I have joined the up and awake club for the day. Today's To Do List includes checking the back yard and hunting down the things which blew off my potting table in yesterday's wind and clearing out the fridge in preparation for tomorrow's grocery delivery.

Hello again, I need a movie recommendation. My brain has gone to mush so nothing too intellectual please
Dark Crystal, because Fizgig
Princess Bride
Any of the early marvel movies
You've come to the right place then.
How about some Sherlock Holmes movies? They are entertaining and not too intellectual at all
Labyrinth, Willow, Matilda.
The new superman is brainless fun. Also K-pop demon hunters, Happy Gilmore 1, any minions movie. Most comedy movies will fit the request. Hope you watched something fun!
Thank you! I ended up watching About Time, which was not the most fun movie compared to the ones you listed! Was beautiful though. I might rewatch K-Pop Demon Hunters and Happy Gilmore again at some point!
Thanks for the movie recommendations, have added them to the list! I ended up watching About Time because I remembered back to last week where I heard some people talking about it. Beautiful movie.
