Hi beeeeach

back atcha

7
Bottom_racer - 2mon

Ol' boy rocked up w/ a $600 grass tree. Haven't planted it yet but looking at the price and care instructions... fuck that. I mean it looks nice but who the f pays that for single tree.

10
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 2mon

It should have a tag attached, showing the date and place of gathering and who did the gathering. Also a licence number for the gatherer. That tag needs to stay attached to the tree to prove that it wasn't illegally gathered. There's a HUGE black market for illegally gathered grass trees, both here in Aus and overseas. If it's illegal, then the seller needs to be called out and made to pay the fine. Or the purchaser pays it when discovered. Check state requirements. Also grass trees gathered in maybe QLD can end up here in Vic, where they really don't belong and struggle to survive. It's a poor soil and dry conditions specialist, so overwatering is a real problem for the plant in a suburban setting with automatic watering nearby.

Yes, it won't grow much unless it gets a 'cool burn' around the base every few years - don't burn the topknot cos that kills the tree. It does need some fire in the right place and at the right time to reduce competition around it's very small root zone and so to thrive.

8
Pilk - 2mon

Are these the ones you need to set fire to sometimes?

7
Seagoon_ - 2mon

I wouldn't. They often don't survive.( have seen results of many bushfires )

4
Bottom_racer - 2mon

Gawd hope not.

I have set fire to the other native grasses in the background before but that was a less expensive mistake lol.

3
Rusty Raven - 2mon

They are very slow growing, that tree could be older than you are. Antiques always cost more.

7
Bottom_racer - 2mon

On the care instruction manual, reckoned it's 100 yrs old ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿฆฝ

6
Seagoon_ - 2mon

when logging companies go into old growth forests to cut them down this is what they are really after.

They get more money for the grass trees and tree ferns than they do for the trees.

( we used to call them Black Boys, in open forest and grasslands they get tall and stand alone. )

6
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon

That costs more than my pc lol

5
Bottom_racer - 2mon

lol.. my first thought was dayam that's more than my new soundcard.

Second thought was this will be an expensive mistake. Dude up the road has 3 of these in his front garden. Like $1800 worth of tree that anyone could just dig up and take off with them.

6
Seagoon_ - 2mon

they wouldn't last a week in Carlton

6
Mert - 2mon

I have not used a soundcard since the 80's. Creative labs soundblaster it was. Without one you had to listen to the grating noise of the 1 bit motherboard speaker connector while playing games. These days I use the amazing analog sound output or bluetooth from the motherboard to headphones. You must have really discerning ears.

1
Alamutjones - 2mon

I made a dinky little baby damper in the air fryer, just as an experiment.

Holy shit, this is brilliant

10
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

The man has bought himself a present. He has waited 6 months for this. He is so excited.

9
Pilk - 2mon

That thing scares me

7
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

It scares me too.

5
MeanElevator - 2mon

Lube flavours are getting weirder by the day.

6
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Sex would be fire. Literally.

4
MeanElevator - 2mon

Isn't it always anyway?

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Yes!!!!

3
Seagoon_ - 2mon

is that like a gallon of sambal oelek?

5
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Sambal olek has around 500 - 1000 scoville rating. This has 1.2 million scoville rating. It does however have the same texture if that's what you mean.

4
Seagoon_ - 2mon

why? Why even eat it?

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Because for chilli freaks that first hit gives them a dopamine high. They then try to chase it with more doses.

5
SpinMeRound - 2mon

I... I...

I'm sorry, what?! Is that rating system broken? Would he chow through the Hot Ones without missing a step?

2
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

What are the Hot Ones?

2
SpinMeRound - 2mon

YouTube talk show where the host and his guest eat 10 wings thay get hotter as you got. Quite funny to watch the reactions.

2
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

To answer your original question: yes he would chow through without missing a step.

2
Catfish - 2mon

Approved!I'd go the Scorpion Strike over the plain, but yay ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

I just looked it up and told him how hot it was and his eyeballs got very wide with interest. You are one sick puppy catfish.

4
Catfish - 2mon

Thank you! I'm a bit confused how he found the industrial size bottle without seeing their whole range, but arse burn on babe.

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Because he's bought this size before and when he ran out he went to order it again but it was out of stock. So he patiently waited. He buys it from blonde chilli not the chilli factory because it's cheaper and no delivery fee.

He generally doesn't look at sauces only pastes because he says they're weak. He knows differently now.

Ps. He no longer gets ring sting.

LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Annnd already the snails got all the larger sprouts. I had watered them in after planting and intended to bring the pots inside after the excess water had drained but it seems snails are faster than you think.

More are on the way but that was really shitty. I saw the large fellow crawling away that probably did it and yeeted him as high and far as I could over the fence.

8
Seagoon_ - 2mon

i do not like snails

i go out most evenings on rainy days, winter and summer, and yeet every single snail I see

just keep yeeting, you'll get them all eventually

4
Catfish - 2mon

Hello again, why did you do that? ๐ŸŒ

3
melbaboutown - 2mon

Theft, destruction of property, and speeding.

/s

4
Taleya - 2mon

I move them over to the long grass near the compost and just make the garden unattractive to them

4
melbaboutown - 2mon

Unforch the long grass is right next to the tiny area I have for my pots so theyโ€™d be back to munching in five. I donโ€™t use poisons so chalk, eggshells, beer and the like would frequently be rained away and require constant replenishment

This is why I didnโ€™t deliberately plant veg again

Edit: fwiw I generally aim for them to land on grass in the neighbours yard (the ones whose invasive creeping grass took over my meagre portion). I donโ€™t deliberately hurt them

3
Taleya - 2mon

Copper tape.

Seriously, copper tape. It forms a tiiiny little electric fence. You can also cut rings out of old pots, line them and make mobile fences

4
melbaboutown - 2mon

This is sounding like something that costs money or would get procrastinated until itโ€™s never done :(

My mo is usually to pull them inside at night or put an upturned plastic tub over them at night until theyโ€™ve reached a less vulnerable stage

1
Force_majeure123 - 2mon

Hello there, I am an snail. Please don't yeet me. It is painful and disorientating. ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ

2
Mert - 2mon

They make good eating with garlic butter. In Europe I used to buy frozen dozens of them with the garlic butter already added. In a funky aluminium tray with 12 dints in it ready for the oven.

2
melbaboutown - 2mon

Uhhhโ€ฆ you guys arenโ€™t gonna guess what happened.

TL;DR surprise pumpkins

::: spoiler spoiler After I rushed my little out of season pumpkins through and finished ripening them on the windowsill I left them there to cure and as ornaments. I had plans to pile them into a bowl and paint them as a still life.

But I saw one was rotting. I opened it up to save any viable mature seeds because as an heirloom variety they would be true to the parent plant. And some of the seeds were sprouting inside. ๐ŸŒฑ

Opening up a second pumpkin that was rotting more sneakily, I found more. A lot in both were flat and hollow but so far I have about 32 normal seeds that might be usable and 15 already sprouted ones.

One might not come up because I accidentally buried it too deep in the potting mix and lost itโ€ฆ but one hasty late night potting session later these sprouts at least have a chance.

The least ripe fruit is also rotting but Iโ€™ll open it tomorrow. Itโ€™s unlikely the seeds in that will be developed enough to grow.

There are still 3 pumpkins that havenโ€™t spoiled. :::

Unfortunately I already filled the big pots with flowers and what little ground soil I have is invaded by creeping grass and tree roots from shithead neighbours. I might see if my friendโ€™s kid wants the seedlings and if I can beg a lift to donate the seeds to a seed library

8
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Wow that's pretty cool!!

I've got PT in the morning and an old mate is coming over so we can geek out over guitars lol

Goodnight all โค๏ธ

Goodnight.

Good morning ๐Ÿ˜ด

This is the raw dogging version of gratitude lol

Oh man ๐Ÿ˜‚ you're off the chopping block for another day

3

Just a happy little reminder lol

3
SaneMartigan - 2mon

Open offer to join me tonight for Indian (flora, thx _pilk) and a fringe dance show "Odd to be beings" in the cbd this evening, or not. Xo e: The show is $20-$25 and I'm expecting Indian to be a bit less, so ~$50 all up.

7
Pilk - 2mon

Once you see the crowd there you'll realise you're in the right place for curry.

5
SaneMartigan - 2mon

I'm pretty sure I've been before. It's just been so long since I worked in the city I wasn't sure what had changed. Thx for the tip.

6
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

To celebrate World Menopause Day I'm reading Kaz Cooke's It's The Menopause book. YarraByte's bomb seems appropriate today.

7
DolphinLundgrin - 2mon

I think its a yo-yo no? Still applicable i should think?

6
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Under more closer inspection I think you're right. Lol.

5
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Let us know how it is! I see that book around at work and I'm intrigued

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

Will do. So far it's an interesting read.

3
Pilk - 2mon

I need to leave the house again because I do NOT have any chocolate and I can already sense my disappointed realisation later tonight when I need some.

Edit: I am replete. I knew you folks would understand.

7
CEOofmyhouse56 - 2mon

RUN ๐Ÿ‘‰

6
Eagle - 2mon

Tim tams stat.

2
SaneMartigan - 2mon

How long do you wait outside someone's house when you organised to meet them but they're out running errands and are notoriously bad with times?

6
Catfish - 2mon

10 minutes and I don't care if they are a an ADHD Timeblind Womble. Do better or fuck off.

4
TheWitchofThornbury2 - 2mon

Text them then wait 20 mins max.

4
bacon - 2mon

First time 20 minutes. Next time meet at my house or if possible not meet at all

2
Alamutjones - 2mon

Morning yโ€™all

6
Rusty Raven - 2mon

It's getting hot outside in the sun, but the planting is progressing well. I have 8 holes dug for the next lot of plants, then have 12 groundcovers to plant and I'll have them all in. It's around 60 plants all up, into unimproved soil with grass cover that needs to be removed so it's a lot of work, but I should have it done by the end of the day. Then I get to start on planting the vegies and improving the lawn. Garden boot camp, some people would pay good money to be forced to do this much exercise!

6
Taleya - 2mon

Weird day, i started in a parka and long pants, finished in shorts and a singlet

3
anotherspringchicken - 2mon

Thatโ€™s a very impressive effort! I managed a bit of mowing and planting 2 tomatoes today, although thereโ€™s heaps more to do. I also reckon the gardening makes up for my failure to go to the gym, lol

2
anotherspringchicken - 2mon

Our new resident is a bit hard to see in this pic, but it looks like we wonโ€™t be fixing anything high up for some time

6
Taleya - 2mon

Oof remindsme, i need to put a possum box up so i can rip down those yuccas

3
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon

Iโ€™ve been matching fluffballs nap cadence.

Man being a cat must be awesome lol

5
Catfish - 2mon

Boyo is outside, both to be a stenchful smoker and hiss at possums. The latter is approved.

5
Alamutjones - 2mon

Iโ€™m just chilling today. Itโ€™s great

5
anotherspringchicken - 2mon

Beautiful weather for it!

2
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon

Same and agreed, itโ€™s great

2
Rusty Raven - 2mon

I successfully got all the planting done. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow!

It's amazing how much bigger all the tubestock looks once its actually in the ground and spread out. Hopefully it will soon be much bigger in reality and starting to look like a proper garden.

I have to try and get together enough energy to make some dinner now (for me, the pets are already done) and sort out some lunch for work tomorrow. I'd really rather just stay on the couch.

5
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

My mother made me speak with a travel agent today to get ideas for Japan, and the travel agent suggested doing a tour. Now I'm considering doing one, but I can't go in the onsens with tattoos and would want a private one. I might contact the tour company and ask. I think a few days alone and then a tour could be good.

Edit: the travel agent quoted 7k for a three week Japan trip, which includes flights and accommodation, plus a tour. First week is missing accommodation though unless I go visit a friend in Niseko. A bit exxy? It would be nice to not be alone though.

4
SaneMartigan - 2mon

I wouldn't take a tour. I'd probably do one of the walking pilgrimages or bicycle touring on a cheap local bike. Japan is pretty cheap and I'd be keen to try the sleep pods and net cafe accommodation. Then see as many botanical gardens as possible.

4
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

I love botanical gardens! Would be cool in winter too

1
SaneMartigan - 2mon

They're always cool.

2
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Absolutely.

1
Gibsonhasafluffybutt - 2mon

Why can't you go in an onsen with tattoos?

2
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Because they've been historically associated with organised crime, a lot of places won't let you go in.

2
LowExperience2368 - 2mon

Yes I've heard of Kinosaki! If I don't go on a tour, or just end up going there, I will check out the onsens :)
