Monthly Gardening Discussion Thread - October ‘25

The weather is definitely getting nicer and there’s been some rains. A good time to plant or sow, or even just let your cactus on the windowsill soak it up. What do you have in mind?

I’m not able to get up to much at the moment but thought to do something to support the pollinators. I used the old soil filled pots to sow nasturtiums, California poppies, and alyssum. Small sprouts are starting to come up.

It's time my garden had a bit of mulch thrown around, but there's always disagreement over which type to use. I managed to talk the MIL (it's her property) out of that plastic imitation mulch stuff. I could not believe she was actually considering it. Usually she gets a piddling little bit of pea straw and sprinkles it around, but it's not nearly enough to do any good. I'd be interested to hear about other people's experiences with different types of mulch, what worked and what didn't, and what they like best.

Recently went with just tree mulch (was about $45 a m^3). Avoided the really cheap stuff or $$ dyed stuff. Really piled it on the problem areas (8-10 cm thick) and so far so good.

Saves so much time weeding. Definitely worth going overboard with it.

Thanks for that, not a bad price really.

The flowers are growing bigger in the pots. I’m still having to make sure they don’t get too dry but they’re doing so well

The seeds sprouted inside the mini pumpkins I kept from last year! They’re potted out now. Snails ate the biggest shoots which I’m still unhappy about but more will be coming up.

I have no idea where to put them so might try to give away
