StudSpud The Starchy - 3mon

This trip is good - I've been smoking way less, like single digits. First smoke right now, and I have head spins, I hope I can quit before I return home!

11
Taleya - 3mon

aww yiss, kick its arse

5
Taleya - 3mon

Watching the US "autism" furphy very very closely. Inlaws have fallen - well not full magat, but very very adjacent. Very adjacent

They also have an ASD daughter, ASD daughter in law (me) ADHD son and an AuADHD granddaughter.

We are all watching them very. Very. Closely.

(Ironic thing is we all fucking know my FIL is asd as well, he's just low support)

10
tombruzzo - 3mon

I saw something about it pop up, were they linking paracetamol to autism? Or saying it was alright for pregnant women to take? Not people I'd take health advice from anyway.

And I think neurotypical people, or at least people who don't realise they have something, can start having weird opinions when they have a lot of kids on the spectrum. They probably think, 'nothing's wrong with me, what made my kids this way?' And then the Youtube research begins.

5
Taleya - 3mon

Thing is, apart from the granddaughter we were all very late diagnosed. As in "in our 40's". And like these things tend to do, it tobogganed, I found out first, His Lordship always suspected he was ADHD, but not enough to cause issues until we exceeded his abilities and some Bad Things happened and I told him he was gonna get tested or he'd be a single man wearing his own bum as a hat (paraphrased). Then SIL realised from observance that hey you can be ND and ...not be "disabled" (lotta internalised abelism in that family which is also why His Lordship took so long to get diagnosed) and WHOOPS, there we are. Which also allowed her and her husband to identify a lot of things in one of their daughters and get her to a psychiatrist and learning how to teach her emotional regulation and stimulus control before she turned into the betrayed-feeling anger ball the rest of us are.

so there's sometimes a bit of "oh is it the fashion" and it's like...no. We were always this way. We just didn't need soft crash helmets and were classified as "weird" so you let it skate while we struggled.

6
anotherspringchicken - 3mon

I so relate to this (particularly the ‘betrayed-feeling anger ball’ bit, lol)

E: other blah blah stuff deleted

4
Seagoon_ - 3mon

there is no tylenol in Australia

how does the trump admin explain autism in countries where tylenol is not sold

the corrupt trump admin are relying on the experts and other people to debunk the lies, this will help the share prices rebound

4
anotherspringchicken - 3mon

Yeah, I know, was just being funny

Trump is continuing to create drama after drama, probably to keep everyone distracted from the Epstein files or play the market or something

3
Seagoon_ - 3mon

no, the Epstein files are the distraction from all the corruption and violence

2
Taleya - 3mon

I'd be hells surprised, everyone agrees in hindsight my grandfather was autistic af, and he was born 30 years before paracetamol was available in Australia

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

Or (regardless of diagnosis) it was just being difficult and bad 🙃

3
Seagoon_ - 3mon

the admin didn't mention paracetamol or acetaminophen, they have only mentioned the brand name of tylenol

a famous product

all the independent health experts have been using the word acetaminophen

this admin is very tricky, the lies are sophisticated rhetoric

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

Ahh fuck. I had an actual look and the medicalisation of autism… the focus on “not letting it happen anymore” is probably going to lead to more aggressive attempts to “cure autism” (ABA, bleach, chelation) and maybe even eugenics.

I don’t even have a snarky remark for this. Captain Crunchy and the Cheeto are going to spearhead abusing and killing neurodivergent and disabled people at a higher rate than already happens.

Edit: Also using a funeral to bring this up is a bizarre choice. I… uh… don’t think a certain someone is quite typical himself

5
Taleya - 3mon

oh yeah, there was a reason why my first reaction in another thread was the words "Aktion T4"

looking forward to seeing this mob eventually swinging from something.

5
melbaboutown - 3mon

Uh huh. Not to Godwin but as they say ‘those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it’.

Let’s hope they get a chance to emulate their idols. I hear indoor golf is a great choice for a downstairs rumpus room…

4
Taleya - 3mon

Something something so intellectually bereft they can't even come up with their own fascist takeover

5
melbaboutown - 3mon

Coup by numbers

Quick, get the crayons

5
Seagoon_ - 3mon

it's just another made up drama to manipulate the stock prices

you can guarantee trump, uday and qusay , maybe the muppet, and all their corrupt mates have invested and will reap hundreds of millions

5
SpinMeRound - 3mon

I just read the cliff notes on the Guardian and have no idea where to even fucking begin.

5
Taleya - 3mon

I'd start with quoting Amy Wong. "It's this year's shark cartilage enema!"

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

Ugh I apologise if I’m a bit of an arse today.

I’m really struggling to stay on an even keel right now and the things I see about the state of the world are not helping :(

9
Taleya - 3mon

snugs given the state of affairs, that is a perfectly normal reaction

7
Seagoon_ - 3mon

I agree, anyone who is not freaking out isn't paying attention

3
melbaboutown - 3mon

I was gonna joke about doing some extreme things Van Gogh did but decided not to risk a Lemmy ban or someone with no sense of humour reporting to law enforcement…

My supermarket has been rearranged and I was not consulted. I cannot find the toilet paper

9
Rusty Raven - 3mon

This is one reason I like online shopping. I don't need to physically find anything and can just do a keyword search for anything I might desire. Plus I can sort by unit price.

5
anotherspringchicken - 3mon

I hate it when they do that

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 3mon

I still don't know where my Coles have stashed the eggs.

3

Coles always put eggs in a stupid spot.

3
tombruzzo - 3mon

I was just listening to a 'Christian Metal' band called Demon Hunter. At first I was like, 'can you really tell a band is christian?' But once you know, you can't ignore it. It was like any other American band trying to copy European metal, but the vibes were fucked.

If I didn't know, I'd probably just listen and say it wasn't very good, but the christian angle makes it very off-putting. It even re-contextualises the name, Demon Hunter. Instead of just being something they thought sounded cool, it has much more of an angle to it.

8
CEOofmyhouse56 - 3mon

We once set up a bbq at Jubilee Lake next to a small group listening to music on Australia day. It took me a while to realise we were all listening to Christian rock. I couldn't stop laughing whenever I looked at my husband.

5
StudSpud The Starchy - 3mon

I find Christian Metal to be extremely cringey, I cannot listen to it for long without wanting to laugh and cry lol

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

Christian metal is an oxymoron

Unless that metal is lithium

And with antivax movements intensifying it’ll be back even in developed countries 🫩

4
Seagoon_ - 3mon

and with bigger households and more poverty

( when I lived in Box Hill 30 years ago I tested as having been in contact with TB but of course I was young and healthy and inoculated so nothing came of it )

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

And poorer nutrition and less time for rest

And more reliance on public transport

4
Seagoon_ - 3mon

more travel to and from hot spots

like when I got dengue, that was fun, still not sure where I got it, south Florida I think

Yup! Also taken the electric powered steam train and been to the jetty observatory (aquarium). Didn't do it this time, because SIL and Niece wanted mum and daughter time 💜

3

My watch said to expect dreary weather today. First time I've ever seen a word besides sunny or partly cloudy. It was like being in a sauna today. Way too warm in the building, and I'm someone who gets cold easily.

Today at the beach I found the usual shells and also a Ganesh that had washed up. It's ok to take them, they have been offered and received by the gods.

took a short vid of some birds

6
tone212_ - 3mon

Today was a shit day - mood low, irritated very easily, tired, stressed out and felt like an anxious mess all day. Putting intentions out there for tomorrow to be a much better day.

Catching up with a friend tomorrow night at a rooftop bar I’ve been wanting to visit. I think I will be indulging in a cocktail or two.

6
LowExperience2368 - 3mon

Enjoy the rooftop bar! Hope things pick up for you soon.

4
SpinMeRound - 3mon

Oooh which bar? Let me know if it's any good, I love a good rooftop bar. Hope today is a better day for you!

2
tone212_ - 3mon

I went to Slowpoke in Collingwood. Nice view, great vibe, it will pop off in nicer weather. Cocktails were delicious. Only two food items on a menu, a cheeseburger and hash brown fries. The burger was so so good. I recommend!

2
SpinMeRound - 3mon

Thanks for the review, that sounds like a cool place!! Hope it was the night you needed!

5

Alarm was set for 6, woke up at 530 very refreshed.

Made my way to the train station and IT'S A BUS REPLACEMENT SERVICE

So here I am back home, in my trackies.

5
Taleya - 3mon

Bonus time oh yes. There's something deliciously unwholesome about free time before work

4
MeanElevator - 3mon

As silly as it may seem, I logged in and did a shitload of work before others came online. Pretty much ensures a free afternoon now.

3
Taleya - 3mon

depending on your workload, a lot of us do the same. I snuck in a bit early to get this server whonked out before everyone else rocked up and started with the usual daily support questions....

2
MeanElevator - 3mon

There's a bit of strategy to it as well. I get my shit done early, send it out for approvals mid-late morning. I know the people who I send it to won't ready it unil later afternoon or next day, need their approvals to continue so get free time.

I've got other tasks in between but the main ones get done early and promptly

3
Taleya - 3mon

me: "hmm, I am adhering to good practises but when I set the CPU type on this virtual machine in Proxmox it's not being reflected in its operating system. I have rebooted the vm, I have even gone so far as rebooting the entire enclosure, I have tried other permutations, it is not reflecting. Perhaps I should post upon the forums for consultation."

Forums: waffling response that doesn't answer the actual question rabbiting on about about CPU types and suggesting I use good practises and the CPU type that I have clearly stated I am already using

response two: detailed instructions on how to set the CPU type on the virtual machine. Again, which I have detailed I HAVE ALREADY DONE

I wish to do violence

Seagoon_ - 3mon

sometimes it's the simple things

like not being able to pair a speaker to my computer 😐😐😐

I will try again later

I feel you need a specialist degree just to understand a gas bill these days. Complicated calculations, estimated readings and adjustments, how is the average consumer expected to understand if they're being charged correctly? Just had a call with my old provider about final bill which has made my head hurt trying to understand.

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

They’re deliberately making it confusing and a hassle to make it harder to work out what’s the best deal. They must be.

To my shame I haven’t been keeping up on pricing and switching frequently… I just don’t have the bandwidth for it

4
Seagoon_ - 3mon

train track maintenance is low frequency and loud , can hear it even tho it is miles away

and time for a walk on the beach 😊

4

Last night I made noodles and when I turned around the man had added a half a jar of sambal oelek to my bowl thinking it was his. Today my bum bum hole feels warm and tingly.

4

but I bet you were lovely and warm in last night's chill

5
CEOofmyhouse56 - 3mon

I was!

3
SpinMeRound - 3mon

Was it deliciously worth it though?

4
CEOofmyhouse56 - 3mon

I tried to scoop out as much as I could so it was bearable to eat but the coming out part was not enjoyable.

6
melbaboutown - 3mon

I wish I had a shed or a comfortable outdoor space to work in to allow the use of solvent… and maybe a cat proofed yard or large catio or run for the fuzzy one, to keep her with me so she doesn’t get anxious but keeps her away from breathing the solvent and out of the paint.

I can’t say the paintings produced would be high quality but having a proper working space would give me the chance to do something constructive and maybe kind of regulate.

4
Seagoon_ - 3mon

outdoor table on the back door step as a place to clean brushes?

3
melbaboutown - 3mon

Yeah but I’m gonna have to do multiple brush cleanings between colours while painting and can’t really do that inside.

I can take it all into the back room and blast air through as a crossbreeze for ventilation but still babygirl is asthmatic and glued to me.

And if I don’t have everything well up out of her reach (ie rearrange everything to accommodate a folding table or buy a easel) she’ll stand in it, tip it over or brush against it. I don’t want to risk it.

I also can’t get around using linseed oil for thinning, because water doesn’t work well on the ‘water soluble’ oils. Even if I didn’t do the wet on wet technique and stuck to traditional you must layer thinned paint over thick paint *for wet on wet and the opposite for traditional?

Edit: ok there is a purchasable medium but the cost is eye watering.

Maybe I should just try them solvent free though. And deal with the nightmare of cleaning them with soap. Try to find the most inexpensive primary colour set to mix colours myself and actually try. See how bad the cleaning and thinning actually is for myself (and potentially have to throw away a brush).

Unfortunately that would create a lot of contaminated rinse water that I’d have to try and evaporate off to bin the solids… because I wouldn’t want to pour it down the sink or even against the foundation of my house.

Research is needed for how toxic they are and what the disposal protocol is I guess.

3
Seagoon_ - 3mon

don't use brushes for more than one colour, don't clean brushes with spirits between uses . just wipe them really well

this is what mark carder recommends on his draw mix paint site

2
melbaboutown - 3mon

I could try. But oh wow the cost on these paints. So much more than normal oils :’(

I was just playing some Rush and doing it properly with the timing and a metronome. Their music can be simple and easy to play along with just off vibes, but there's always something going on that throws you off when you try to count it properly

3
melbaboutown - 3mon

I’ve been rewashing the same laundry… well, it’s been sitting overnight because I fell asleep. It’s going to be washed to nothing.

🦥

2
Thornburywitch - 3mon

I think this is called "stripping" laundry - has to be done once in a while to remove soap residue. Extends the life of the garments/linens and does not harm them.

4
melbaboutown - 3mon

I’ve washed it (mumble) times with gentle soap and vinegar

I’m not sure if it’s caused wear yet as ironically these are delicate

2
tombruzzo - 3mon

I like to ride but the drive to work has been very smooth recently because of school holidays. I wondered why I hadn't noticed it before and I usually don't start so close to 9. I either ride or start early so I haven't been able to appreciate the drop in traffic.
