Reading about the LNG Hub Leak

^made with Canva, irl photo FlickR/Ken Hodge^

The article has previously been posted, but its so freakin egregious,

State and federal authorities reportedly approved Santos’ controversial 25-year Barossa offshore gas project without requiring the leak to be repaired or replaced.

Long-hidden methane leak in Darwin raises fresh doubts over Australia’s climate action Published: September 2, 2025 3.46pm AEST

The Darwin case demonstrates dangers of relying on industry to assess and manage risks to the climate and human health.

Ah no shit. As if this wasn't obvious from every other "self regulated" industry.

Its the most milquetoast way of describing an obvious case of a corrupted State/Company relationship.

Once again the costs are being borne by the people and environment, not those who have the money; power; ethical and legal responsibility, to do anything about it.

Hope Murray Watt is paying attention and considering this shit, since he keeps shovelling more feed to the gas beast. (I suppose with dubious conditioning caveats this time).

As Bob Brown pointed out Murray has met with dozens of large corps and fossil fuel company executives and zero conservation groups.

I blame voters. It's not like Labor didn't have a track record of complete disaster for the previous 3 years.

I wanted to defend the Government a little on this, but i haven't read the article, and i can't be going through all the quarterly emissions data to work out why theres been a plateauing.

Had a look at End December 2024 Quarter.

The quote below seems to hint there might be some anomalous reults driving the plateauing such as air travel. I don't thinknin a drying continent you could argue that lower hydro generation is anomalous though, so maybe thats systemic.

increased electricity emissions (up 2.2%; 1.5 Mt CO2-e), as lower hydro generation led to increased contribution from all other forms of generation, including fossil fuels

an increase in transport emissions (up 1.9%; 1.9 Mt CO2-e), mainly due to consumption of road diesel and domestic aviation fuel reaching their highest levels on record.

One thing i am thinking about now, with the revelation of this LNG Darwin leak, are they going back and revising up all those years when it was in leaking during operation? I haven't heard anything speaking to that.
