Response Statement from Justice for Palestine Magan-djin

Today's ruling applies only to the Story Bridge leg of our assembly, we are still assembling peacefully at Raymond Park at 1pm this Sunday 24th August. While Israel proceeds with their invasion of Gaza City—where they plan to ethnically cleanse 1.5 million Palestinians from their homes, in flagrant violation of international law—the Magistrates Court has decided to grant the Queensland Police Service (QPS) request not to authorise us to march across the Story Bridge, based on the evidence presented in court by QPS.

Blocking us from marching over the bridge is a political decision that fundamentally undermines the democratic right to protest in this city. QPS answers to the LNP state government, and witness statements were given by the LNP city council. Politicians of the LNP have made no secret of the fact that they support Netanyahu, who is currently a fugitive of the International Criminal Court, wanted for crimes against humanity. They are happy to close down the bridge for a marathon, as recently as two months ago, but will not allow the people of conscience in this city to march against one of the greatest atrocities in human history.

Over the past 22 months of Israel's genocide, Justice for Palestine Magan-djin has led no less than 86 safe, peaceful, and family friendly protests in this city. JFP organisers will assess our options over the next 24 hours, before deciding on a path forward for our rally on Sunday. What is certain is that we will still assemble peacefully at Raymond Park at 1pm this Sunday 24 August. Keep an eye on our channels for updates and, most importantly, keep fighting. Real power lies with the people. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
