Not an answer but after paying $15 for a dozen eggs yesterday I think it's time to get some chickens. It might not be super cost effective but at least they'll be good quality.

Vet, medical and dental costs mean that there probably won't be much extra spending.
But I did get a washable electric blanket because come Winter I'll be needing it. Electric blankets are cheaper than putting the heating on and get warmer than throws.

Update: Electric blankets are definitely worth it, even if you can only afford a cheap one. I’m using it to avoid switching the heater on.
(Definitely choose the electric blanket over a heated throw because better results. Heaps warmer.)
