I hear a lot of stupid people crying... Why don't schools have bikes without chain guards? The two accidents mentioned in the article probably cost more that buying chain guards for all the bikes in the country.

If a child drowned at swimming lessons, that would be an absolute tragedy... but mandating some kind of safety device, with the outcome being fewer kids receive swimming lessons, is obviously going to increase the risks to kids.

Bike helmet laws are also demonstrably a huge self-own for public health. All the data we have shows very clearly that helmets don't reduce the severity of injuries and impede a cycling culture.

Uh, sorry, but that's just not true. The data we have show very clearly that, as an individual decision, wearing a helmet is absolutely a good idea.

When it comes to public policy, other factors like participation rates come into play and are worth discussing, but not the individual impacts.
